For the first time people with hearing loss and deafness across the United States will be asking their local theaters to demonstrate accessibility during the month of November 2012 when they attend captioned movies as part of the “Show Us the Captions!” advocacy campaign.

Theaters can provide captioning through different ways. One method is to show an open caption film where all seats in the theater have access.  Showings of this type are uncommon and generally offered at inconvenient times. Another way to provide access is to equip theaters to accept streaming captions which are displayed on individual viewing devices. If a film has closed captions, it can be accessible at every show time and limited only by the number of devices available. To learn more about closed captioning, click here

Sponsored by the Collaborative for Communication Access via Captioning (CCAC), this campaign is intended to

• Promote captioning services to potential movie goers who don’t know their local theater has them.
• Demonstrate the real need for captioning to theater owners.
• Raise awareness of inclusion and accessibility issues to the general public.
• Show appreciation to the cinemas that provide access via captioning.

The Association for Late Deafened Adults, Chicago chapter, is spearheading the campaign and hosting their own event on November 17, 2012. Additional events that same day are being sponsored by The Hearing Loss Association of America, Kansas City and Association of Late Deafened Adults in Boca Raton, Florida. The Hearing Loss Association of Pennsylvania will host an event on December 2,  and The Hearing Loss Association of Greater St. Louis will have an event on November 9.
